NOT CHRIS'S CONTEST!
I am looking at hosting a model contest over on my derbythis forum and would like to gain a little knowledge on what all it takes for a contest. My first thought is no entry fee with a $100 payout which would be in the form of a visa gift card or gift certificate to somewhere model related. I am thinking a single class with a payout of $50 for best of show and $25 each for best fresh derby car and best smashed car after the top car is picked. Rules would be full weld with specific rules for engine compartment, cage, gas tank, battery, etc. What do you think of this idea and what other advise can you give me?

It would be a total of $100 payout. With it broken out paying the three places but yes no entrance fee. I am paying for it out of my pocket so $100 is about all I can do. So overall best would receive $50 and the two best in the category of fresh and bent would each receive $25. I will try and work on some rules tonight and post them to see what you all think of them including the scoring basis. I am thinking it will be sometime in July. It will be on the derbythis website when everything gets hashed out.

What do you think of these rules and judging criteria. I am new to this whole thing so I am not going to have my feelings hurt if there is something that needs changed.
Rules 1) Gas tank must be moved to the back seat area and must be metal. Original fuel tank should be removed. If you do leave it in you must drill it in at least 4 spots. 2) Battery must be moved to passenger floor panel and be in a box. You are only allowed one battery. It must also be covered if not a gel cell battery(Optima). 3) Protection Products (ie, Distributor Protector, Pulley Protector, cradle, etc.) may be used 4) This is a solid weld show. You may weld any factory seam. Non-factory seams may not be welded. This includes sliding the hood forward as well as any other created seam. If you slide the hood forward you may weld to the point at which it starts bending down. You can use rebar, cold roll, or small width strap for all exterior seams to fill gaps. All other seams must be filled with the weld only. 5) Standard 4 point cage may be used. It may not extend back more than 4” (scale within reason) from the seat bar and no farther forward than the firewall. You may have 4 down bars on each corner of the cage. These bars may not be attached to the frame. You must have some sort of rollover protection. This can be a halo bar or a single bar behind the driver’s seat. This bar must remain vertical and should not be mounted on an angle. Gas tank protectors may be used. They may only be attached to the seat bar. All bars in the proximity of the driver’s head should be padded. 6) You must have at least one bar and no more than 2 running from the roof to the front cowl area of the car. You may also have up to 2 bars running from the back window running down to no farther back than the front trunk seam. You may use netting on the driver's side window opening and across half of the front windshield area in front of the driver. 7) Any engine/transmission combination may be used. No holes larger than a distributor clearance hole may be left uncovered. You may use rubber or like size material to cover the hole if you have to cut out for the engine/transmission. This is not meant as an area to reinforce your car. You may also run a floor shifter which does not need to be covered. No kickers are allowed. You are allowed one set of secondary motor mounts. 8) Fuel line if used must run inside along passenger side floor board. No fuel lines will be allowed under the car. 9) You may do a leaf conversion on any car. 10) 80's and newer cars are allowed to be tilted. 11) Any bumper may be used and attached in any way but can be welded no further back than the stock location of the bumper brackets. 12) Any and all prebending is allowed 13) Pre ran cars are allowed 2 frame patches per frame rail. These must be flat and cannot wrap around the edge of the frame. These must be welded on and painted in contrasting color for easy identification by the judges. Use discretion on these as it is not intended as a way to reinforce your car. 14) If it is not in the rules it will be considered a grey area so use your creativity.
Truck Specific Rules 1. Trucks must follow the rules above with the exceptions below. The gas tank must be in the center of the bed close to the cab unless it is a suburban or extended/crew cab truck. You must have a spreader bar going across the bed just behind the fuel tank. The bed must be welded to the cab Judging Criteria
1. Realism (1-10) How much the car looks like an actual derby car. This includes rust, derby specific parts, etc. 2. How the car would do in this derby in it's respective class (1-10) This will be open to all derby vehicles including trucks, old iron, compacts, and 80's and newer. All cars will be judged individually and not compared for strength against the other cars but will be divided as if they were running their specific class with the rules as set forth. 3. Build Quality(1-10) This is more for the quality of the build such as actually wiring it, quality of the craftsmanship, and overall quality of the car.
Total 30 Points Possible. You will receive 1 point deduction for any item on the car that is not within the rules as set forth. Use the grey area rule to get creative.
